Bavaria Trip – Part 1

6th September to 9th September 2023

Travelled down to Kent on Wednesday and stopped at the Black Horse Farm Club Campsite which is about 15 mins from Eurotunnel or Le Shuttle as its now known. The site was well run as expected but the local farmer had decided to treat his fields with something unspeakably smelly and mixed with 30 degree heat, the stench was so strong the german lady on the next pitch would not even leave her motorhome. It took a couple of days for the smell to dissipate from our motorhome after we left.

Very early Thursday morning we were at the Pet Welcome centre at Eurotunnel with Mac. Having checked that his paperwork was all in order, and having checked that we didn’t have any escaped convicts in the motorhome (Daniel Khalife was still on the run) we made our way to Calais.

The drive to Luxembourg (our first stop) was uneventful – just as I had hoped. We arrived at Campsite Bon Accueil to clear blue skies and 32 degrees. This is a lovely quite and airy site within 15 min of the city centre. And for half the price of last night in Kent, with better facilities, it’s a bargain. Time to relax with an ice cold German beer in a frosted glass. Let to holiday begin.

On Friday we dropped another 250km into Germany. We are currently sitting on the banks of the Neckar River close to Heidelberg. The site (Camping Heidelberg) is a small ribbon of land between the road and the river. It has all the basics covered but with a fantastic river setting. Temperature still at 30 degrees with clear blue skies.

Heidelberg itself is a 10 min bus ride from right outside the camp gate. I hadn’t heard much about the city but I was pleasantly surprised. Based around an ancient university it has a wonderful feel about it especially the area under Heidelberg Palace which sits high on the hill. Time to find some shade for Mac and a couple of cold beers.

This site is close to the road so can be a little noisy, however there is nothing quite like sitting on the riverbank watching the boats and wildlife. So far 2 kingfishers, swans, some weird ducks (species unknown) and many cormorants who spend their time trying to catch the plentiful trout.

Distance so far 1083Km according to google maps.
