26th September to 28th September 2023
We stopped at Camping Bon Accueil again on the way back for a couple of nights. We needed to find a local vet for Mac. As an AHC condition for re-entry into the UK, he needed a worming tablet administered by a European Vet and for the Vet to signed the AHC paperwork. We found one about 10mins drive from the campsite – VetCare Cabinet Veterinaire. 55 Euros later (don’t get me started) the paperwork was signed and Mac was given a clean bill of health.
We arrived back at Eurotunnel the next day a couple of hours early and hoped for an early train. No such luck. In fact there was an hour delay – frustrating. Back home now and watching the rain and grey skies.
Overall, such a great trip but what did we learn?
- Southern Germany in September is still very busy. If you don’t want to play “chase the stellplatze space” with the Germans, then plan and book sites early.
- The ACSI card wasn’t accepted anywhere we stayed in Germany or France and didn’t cover it’s cost.
- The quality of the facilities on the sites we stayed at were much better than a club site in the UK.
- The average price per night for 2 people, a motorhome, a dog and EHU was £31.32 which is roughly equivalent to UK prices at club sites.
- The AHC is a significant cost making up 20% of the total cost of our trip. It may be worth considering registering Mac as a European dog with an old style pet passport in future.
- German roads are largely smooth and flat and devoid of potholes which was great for a rattly motorhome. But just like the UK they need maintenance so we experienced a lot of contraflows and road works.
