Hollym – East Yorkshire

16th Aug 2021 to 21st Aug 2021

Another part of the country we have yet to visit – Hollym in East Yorkshire. Just above Hull and by the coast. For this trip we will be meeting my sister and her partner for a few days of exploration and a few laughs.

The site we jointly picked was a small site called Garth Farm which we booked through Pitchup – here is a link. Hannah (who looks after the site) was quick to introduce herself when we arrived and provided the all important details of where to go and where not to go. I appreciate this from any site I stay at. Puts me at ease at the start of the break.

The site is mostly camping with 5 or 6 hard standing pitches and a unisex wash block. There was no drive-over grey waste facility but Hannah was happy that I ran a pipe into a gully behind my pitch. Another point to note was the lack of a flushing chemical waste disposal point. There was a large plastic septic tank to tip it into, but for those of us who have this daily job, you will know that this arrangement is adequate at best. And by the way, don’t try the local pub – about as welcoming as The Slaughtered Lamb in American Werewolf in London.

Hornsea

We drove up to Hornsea one day and had a mooch around the sea front.

Withernsea

The next day, with the weather a lot brighter we walked into Withernsea from the capsite – about 2.5miles., and found a very pleasant pub called the Butterfly where we enjoyed some liquid refreshment in the sunshine.

Bridlington

Our next trip took us further up the coast to Bridlington. Although only a couple of hours away, the journey was like a time-warp back 40 years or more. The fun fair, ferrus wheel and boat trips fitted perfectly alongside the Victorian architecture – an ideal film set for someone trying to create a 1960s British seaside town atmosphere. Worryingly, this time-warp had seemingly also removed any memory of Covid as we were the only people to be wearing face masks. We also visited Flamborough Head and lighthouse and spent some very pleasant minutes watching the seals in the bay beneath the cliffs.
