We followed the Neckar river upstream past Stuttgard to a small town called Tubingen. We parked up at a site called Neckar Camping, which as you would expect is on the riverside. Great facilities here cold beer, SUP to hire, restaurant and a 25 minute walk along the river into town. It was a Sunday when we arrived so the town probably had a different feel to it that a week day with all the big shops closed. The town had its outside cafe culture in full swing, with the blue skies still in attendance. Although not on many tourist guidebooks, the architecture of the old town was the quintessential half-timbered frontages with pastel coloured rendering. Such a great atmosphere.
The next travel objective was to head down to Lake Constance to a camp site in Lindau. Park Camping Lindau am See. I tried to book via email. No response. Tried phoning “we’re too busy to answer the phone right now” or I think that was what the recorded German lady was saying. So we just turned up. They were full. So was the stellplatze by the Allgau skywalk – Kurhaus Scheidegg. So was the stellplatze at Lindenberg I’m Allgau. After a lot of cursing and a brief intervention into Austria (before I did a u-turn as I had no GPS toll device), we found a campsite with some space – Campingplatz Alpenblick. I must say that I wasn’t expecting Southern Bavaria to be this busy in September. The SearchforSites app has been my primary resource. Of far greater value than ASCI or Google.
Campingplatz Alpenblick is on the outskirts of Lindenberg im Allgau. It’s a pleasant little town that’s famous for hats apparently, although we saw no signs of that. The site itself was ideal for us. It’s quiet, has large fixed pitches and good facilities. It is of course more expensive than a stellplatze but we prefer to get the sun chairs out and relax with a beer and alpine views over the fields with the cows bells making the only sound. Rather than racing to a stellplatze to claim a space before lunch and be sandwiched into a layby for most of the day.
