St Davids, Pembrokeshire

21st July to 24th July 2024

First impressions – what a long way from Stafford! We entered Wales after about an hour and a half and then travelled another 3 hours along the A and B roads south west to the most westerly tip of Wales. We eventually arrived to find the site was perched atop the Pembrokeshire cliffs with views out across the waves. My sister and her partner Andy had arranged this trip to Celtic Camping not far from St Davids on the Pembrokeshire coast.

The campsite had a number of fields at the heart of which were a shower block, bunkhouse and amenities for catering for large groups. I think that is where it’s main business focus was aimed. Although it was basic, it was sufficient.

Nearby there is the fascinating city of St Davids with it’s long ecclesiastical history and architecture, not to mention the tradition Welsh pastie – the oggie. A roast lamb Sunday lunch in a pastry case – superb. Get them from Losh’s Pastries.

Also in St Davids we booked a boat trip to see the puffins on Skomer Island (Ramsey Island Booking Office). The trip was scheduled at 2:45 pm to align with the tides, from RNLI Lifeboat Station at St Justinians and luckily the weather was warm, clear with only a slight breeze. Surprisingly the boat was a large inflatable “rib” that seated about a dozen people and our 2 dogs. After a few moments of apprehension as we set off (at speed) we gradually settled into an excellent and informative trip. We saw many puffins, in flight and feeding, as well as porpoise, seals, shearwaters, gannets and of course various types of seagull. I thoroughly recommend the trip, but be careful with the weather as there is no protection from the elements on the boat.

Motorhome Niggles

Reassuringly once again – none at all. TMD Motorhomes have come back with a replacement price (excluding fitting) of £135 for a replacement key lock for the electric drop down bed I mentioned in my last post. A £2 or £3 lock on ebay, but integrated into the circuit board for the bed controls and hence the £135. As it is in the ON position and the bed functions correctly I think ill forget about that. If I’m honest I was never convinced that there was actually a need to turn the bed controls off.

Round trip distance 372 miles according to google maps.
