En Route to Southern Ireland

14th Sept 2024

Motorhome packed and ready to go. Dog senses we are about to go travelling and is over ecited at the prospect. The problem – we’re not scheduled to leave until tomorrow. Oh well – let’s just go. Booked a night at Penrhos Club Campsite in Anglesey and off we went.

The club site was exactly what we expected, which is the reason we chose it. Just a stop-over to break up the journey to the ferry in Hollyhead. The crossing was booked for 10:40 so we expected a relaxed breakfast and make our way to the terminal. Irish Ferries had other ideas – ferry cancelled due to bad weather. Not a great start, but after a 4 hour wait we were loaded onto the 14:10 and the adventure began.

Unfortunately the delay had a knock-on effect, since the campsite we booked closed at 7pm and the drive through the centre of Dublin at rush hour had us arriving well after that. The campsite was Moneylands Farm in Arklow, County Wicklow and after a quick phone call they were more than happy to accommodate a late check-in. A great little site made up of a few self-catering apartments and motorhome bays with electric, toilet and motorhome servicing facilities all for 25 euros a night. The real gem here was the on-site café – the Broken Chair Café. We had a tremendous cooked breakfast. The staff were wonderful also. We spent a couple of nights there and had a wonder around nearby Arklow and the sandy cove at Clogga which Mac loved especially.
