The Magnificent Glenbeg

17th Sept 2024

The weather forecast looks amazingly fine for the next few days. Clear skies and warm sunshine. Not what we packed for but a superb bonus. With that in mind we decided to head toward the west coast. Looking at the maps and google, it would be a 4 and a half hour drive so we agreed to a detour via Blarney near Cork where there is a Caravan and Motorhome club affiliated site. It was a bit out of our way but broke the journey in half.

From Kilmore Quay we drove down to Waterford and on to Dungarvan Bay before heading inland toward Cork. Waterford looked like a city we would normally love to explore. However it didn’t like motorhomes too much and all the car parks we came across had height restrictions. Oh well, I’m sure there will be another day. That also applied to Dungarvan Bay which looked picturesque in the sunshine as we drove past.

Blarney Caravan and Camping Park is situated a mile or so from the famous castle. It made for a great stop over and offered more than we had time to partake in. Not just the nearby Blarney Stone, the site itself had a pitch and put golf course which I would have loved to try. But Blarney was just a means to an end and we were up and off first thing to get to the coast whilst the sun was still shining.

The journey to the coast was only 143 km but google was saying 2 and a half hours. The reason, we found out was the small, narrow winding roads for the last 30 miles. But ohh was it worth it. We had booked a pitch at Glenbeg Caravan and Camping Park on the Ring of Kerry. As we turned the last bend and looked down at the site we were astonished. Take a look at the photos. From a location perspective probably the best site we have ever used. Absolutely stunning with a pitch on the beach and Michelin restaurant alongside. I am sure with grey skies, rain and high wind it wouldn’t have the same appeal, but during our few days there it was perfection. I even managed to catch some lovely mackeral which we grilled on the BBQ for dinner.

Reassuringly once again – none at all.
