Buxton

28th July to 31st July 2023

We decided to squeeze in another long weekend before we plan to go up to Edinburgh in August and then across to Germany in September. As this trip was only for a few days we didn’t want to travel too far so we picked Buxton in the Peak District which is about an hour from home.

The site we picked was Buxton Club Campsite which is run by the Caravan and Motorhome Club. We picked the site because it fits our preferred criteria of a) being within walking distance of something interesting and b) a site that promised a little character. In this case the interest was Buxton itself which was about 40mins walk away (a bit further than I thought by looking at the map), and the site was located in what seemed to be an old granite quarry which gave it an added charm. Old granite quarry makes it sound industrial and bleak. Far from it. Nature has reclaimed it over many years and the site is green and sheltered with the additional character of the granite escarpments. The wardens on duty (as we find with all of our visits to CAMC sites) were friendly and helpful and the toilet block was band new. So couldn’t ask more of the site and facilities.

We found Buxton town to be an understated gem of a town. Architecture of all ages dating back to the roman and a town centre that hadn’t lost its charm to multi-nation corporate branding. A small sign on the towns spa and baths read “Built by the Romans and recently refurbished by the town council in 1921”. Says it all really, a little well maintained time capsule.

As we were in the Peak District, we couldn’t resist a visit to Chatsworth House. The Capability Brown gardens and landscaping are simply works of art and the presence that the house creates within the grounds all add to the majesty of the place. Having said that, I did think the entrance fee of £32.50 each was a trifle steep, even for such a majestic estate.
