Glenbeg Caravan and Camping Park was a treat for us and will be difficult to beat, but we couldn’t stay there indefinitely so we had to make a move west. Glenbeg is on the Ring of Kerry which, like the NC500, is a popular tourist route. Also like some stretches of the NC500, the Ring of Kerry is very narrow in parts and the local convention is that all large vehicles (including motorhomes) should only drive anti-clockwise around the ring. This avoids large vehicles needing to constantly squeeze past each other on the narrow sections especially where the rocks overhang the road. I had thought of visiting Portmagee and the Skellig Islands where the filming of some of the recent Star Wars films took place, but that meant a long drive the wrong way round the Ring of Kerry, and the weather for a 16 mile boat trip out to the islands wasn’t looking good over the next few days. So we decided to skip on the Killarny.
The drive (anti-clockwise around the Ring of Kerry) was breathtaking. Mols’s Gap and Ladies View were absolutely stunning. The photos can’t take in the scale and beauty of the place.
The camp site we were heading for was Killarney Flesk Caravan & Camping Park situated on the outskirts of Killarney. This is a small, clean campsite with it’s own pub/restaurant next door called the Ivy Lounge at the Victoria. It’s located about 20-25mins walk from the town centre but there is bike hire just by the gate and of course the Jaunting carriages if you can’t be bothered with the walk. The thought of trying to get Mac to behave in a Jaunting carriage, meant we stuck to the walking option. We walked down to Ross Castle in one direction and Muckross House / Torc waterfall in the other. Both part of the Killarney National Park, and both get our recommendations.
